Eugene H. McShane
Eugene H. McShane, 92, of Grandeville Court, Wakefield, R.I., formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away in Newport, R.I., on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Born in Stonington, CT, on June 26, 1924, he was a son of the late Archibald B. and Elizabeth Coon McShane. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Philomena DeSimone Pietraallo; his twin brother, John F. McShane; two sisters, and four additional brothers. He leaves his daughter, Marilyn McShane Levine of Richmond, R.I. and his son Dr. E. Mac McShane and his wife, Dr. Cynthia Calvin of Carbondale, CO; his grandson, Joshua H. Levine and his wife, Susan Hale Levine of Fremont, NH; his grandson, Benjamin D. Hirsch – McShane and his wife, Sarah McShane of San Francisco, CA. He also leaves his two beloved great-grandsons, Nathaniel Hale Levine and Ethan Hillary Levine of Fremont, NH; his niece and business partner, Marian McShane Headington and her husband, William Headington of Rainbow City, Alabama; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Gene was a WW II Veteran, serving in Company 1, 395th Infantry Regiment from March 1943 - October 1945. Trained as a Forward Observer, he was involved in seven campaigns and two invasions, including D-Day+1 on Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Liberation of Paris. He was a member of the VFW Post 1265 in Pawcatuck, CT. and a former volunteer fireman for both the Wequetequock and Pawcatuck Fire Companies. He served as chairman of the Zoning Building Commission in Pawcatuck Fire District and also served as the Stonington Tax Assessor. Gene moved to Pittsburgh in 1972, becoming the Manager of Property Taxation for Westinghouse Electric Corporation for many years until his retirement, at which time he became an independent consultant. In 2014, he moved back to New England. He was an avid golfer, skier, and runner; he ran the Pittsburgh Great Race nine times. Throughout his life, he had a passion for the sea, taking every opportunity to be on the water. He loved bowling and playing pool, often in tournaments at BrightView Commons. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service with Full Military Honors, at 9:30 a.m., on Monday, March 13th at River Bend Cemetery, 117 Beach Street, Westerly. A memorial service will follow at 11a.m., at the Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia Street, Peace Dale, R.I.
