Dr. Keith L. Martz, DDS September 26, 1932 ~ February 12, 2017 Resident of Walnut Creek, Ca Dr. Martz was born in Bowdle, South Dakota , to Martha and Leonard Martz. The family moved to California when he was 2 years old and settled in a small town in the San Joaquin Valley, Lodi, where there was a large settlement of Germans from the midwest. His father was a master auto mechanic and his mother was a cosmetologist. He attended Lodi schools and married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Barritt. They were married for 64 years. Both attended UC Berkeley. When the Korean conflict broke out he was drafted into the Army and trained as a combat photographer at San Luis Obispo Signal Corps Training School. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington where he became the Post Photographer. He and Joanne returned to California in 1955 where he continued his pre-dental studies at Sacramento State College. He was accepted to the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco, now known as UOP Dental School. He received many student awards and scholarships from dental auxiliaries throughout the state and graduated at the top of his class. He opened his practice in Walnut Creek in 1961 in the historic George Emanuel Adobe that is now known as Drs, Park. He was the first dentist in Ygnacio Valley. He moved across the street from that location to a home on Ygnacio Valley Rd. He returned to his alma mater as a professor of clinical dentistry and served for many years until he was appointed to the State Board of Dental Examiners. He was one of the first dentists to use the newly invented tooth colored filling material called composite. He was requested to consult on many difficult cases by his classmates in California and Utah. In Walnut Creek he was active in the community in the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, Contra Costa Dental Society He became a private pilot and was active in several aviation groups. He flew to Mexico many times, Alaska and the midwest. He practiced for 37 years and his practice was taken over by his daughter, Dr. Lynne Martz-Marshall and her husband Dr. Andrew Marshall. He is survived by his wife Joanne, 3 children Chris of San Diego, Lynne of Walnut Creek and Todd of Pleasant Hill. He was preceded in death by his oldest son David of San Diego. He had 4 grandchildren, Amy, Kelly, Kaden and Cole. Private services were held and his ashes scattered at sea.
