In memory of
James Sylvester (Jim) Herman
James (Jim) Sylvester Herman James (Jim) Sylvester Herman, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Alcester Care & Rehab Center in Alcester, SD. Jim was born September 20, 1930 in Parkston, SD to Henry & Mary (Puetz) Herrmann. He grew up and was educated in the Mitchell area. As a young man, he enlisted in, and was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corp. After his discharge, he was united in marriage to Darlene Gibson on July 20, 1954 in Luverne, MN. Jim worked for various construction firms through the years until starting his own construction company, Herman Construction, in 1976. His family and friends will always remember him for his work ethic, his love of trains and tractors, TV westerns and the music of Johnny Cash. Those that knew and loved him the most will never forget the twinkle in his eye and his sheepish grin that he couldn't control when telling one of his famous "Ole and Lena" jokes. We will think of him whenever we see any of the many homes and buildings that his strong and capable hands built in Sioux Falls and beyond. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Darlene; children Bob (Nancy) Herman, Barb Herman, Patty (Kevin) Kase, Michael (Kelley) Herman and Michelle Herman, daughter-in-law Jean Herman and grandchildren Christina, Tim, John and Damon; brothers and sisters Virginia (Don) Hall, Elmer Herrmann, Charles (Shirley) Herrmann and Marie Gordon; many nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his son Don, his parents, and siblings Don (Kay) Herrmann, Josephine (Clarence) Puetz and Florence (William) Reinartz. The family would like to acknowledge a special thank you to the nurses and caregivers at Alcester Care & Rehab for everything they did for Jim each day as well as the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for the comfort they provided him in his final days. A private family service will be held at Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Condolences may be directed to family members at PO Box 88302, Sioux Falls, SD 57109.
