In memory of
Richard Walter "Dick" Wicks
Richard Walter "Dick" Wicks, 65, of Cary, North Carolina, died peacefully in his own home surrounded by his family on Friday morning, Feb. 10, 2017. He was the second child of 10 born to Flavius and Gloria Wicks of St. Marys. The legacy Dick Wicks leaves behind is one of perseverance, humility and boundless compassion. After earning his B.S. in biochemistry from Penn State in 1973, Dick promptly accepted a job in Nutly, New Jersey at Hoffmann La Roche, Inc. where he would meet his wife, and develop and patent diagnostic tests (immunoassays). Dick moved back to St. Marys to start his own company, Fortron Bio Science, Inc. As an accomplished and world-renown biochemist, Dick sold his company in 2005. The blessing of an early retirement allowed Dick to pursue other passions in life. Dick was an enthusiastic birder, rosarian, gardener and amateur historian, whose passion for genealogy culminated in the production of a book, "Wood Meets Leather: The Ancestral Journey of the Wicks-Gerber Family," which is in the proof stage and expected to be published in May. He is survived by his beloved wife Marie of Cary, North Carolina, daughter Miss Allison Marie Wicks of State College, daughter Miss Bonnie Anne Wicks of Cary, North Carolina, daughter Mrs. Rana Marie Patterson, son-in-law Keith Patterson and granddaughter Kaia Patterson, all of Durham, North Carolina. In addition to his wife and daughters, Dick is survived by five sisters, Jeanne Meyer, Jamie Flatley, Jane Pfaff, Joyce Wicks and Joann Struble; and three brothers, Daniel Wicks, Randal Wicks and Joseph Wicks. In addition to his parents, Flavius and Gloria Wicks, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Wicks. A funeral service for Richard Walter "Dick" Wicks will be held Friday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Rd., Raleigh, N.C. A reception for guests will follow the service at St. Michael's while his immediate family views a private burial. In addition, a gathering will be held at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 N. Michael St., St. Marys, on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 2-4 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 20 from 5-7 p.m. A private family graveside service will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at noon.
