Harold Ray Denton
Harold Ray Denton Farragut, TN Harold Ray Denton, 80, from Farragut, died February 13 following a lengthy challenge with COPD and Alzheimer's. He was born February 24, 1936 in Rocky Mount, NC. He is survived by wife, Lucinda Oliver Denton; daughter, Elizabeth Baird of Holly Springs, NC, Spencer and Kathy Denton of Winston-Salem, NC, Harold Jr. and Susan Denton of Knoxville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Harold graduated from NC State in nuclear engineering and began his career in 1958 at the DuPont Savannah River Plant as a reactor physicist. He joined the Atomic Energy Commission and served over 30 years in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission becoming Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation for a decade. Harold was President Carter's site representative following the Three Mile Island accident and was active in safety follow up after nuclear accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi reactors. He received honorary degrees from Gettysburg College, Lebanon Valley College and the University of Pennsylvania, a Presidential Distinguished Executive Award from President Carter and the James M. Landis Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The family will gather in North Carolina for a Celebration of Life.
