In memory of
Harvey E. White Jr.
Harvey E. White, Jr. Norfolk - Long time Norfolk attorney Harvey Edison White, Jr., 91, of Colony Point Road passed away February 11, 2017, in a local hospital, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born in Norfolk to the late Harvey E. White, Sr. and Mabel Hall White, he was a lifelong resident and advocate for the city of his birth. He was an attorney for over 50 years, practicing first with his father, Harvey Edison White, Sr., and Ed Ryan before going on to assume leadership of the firm. Mr. White went on to mentor many young lawyers over the years and was known among his colleagues for his keen wit and sharp legal mind. Mr. White spent much of his childhood on the water in Riverview, starting with his first row boat and moving on to become an avid sailor and winner of the Maury Regatta. Upon his graduation from the Granby High School, he promptly enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and went on to serve both in combat and in the Intelligence Corps in the Pacific theater in World War II. He returned to Norfolk following the War's end and attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary before continuing on to receive his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia as well and remained a true Jeffersonian throughout his life, always reading, always curious, and always learning, with a particular fondness for all things "T.J." Mr. White remained a proud combat veteran and patriot throughout his life as well and was a past Post Commander, Trustee, and reliable contributor for American Legion Post 35 as well as its longest living member. His patriotism was exceeded only by his faith and Mr. White was both a member of the Khedive Temple and a past Worshipful Master of the Ruth Masonic Lodge. He was also a member and past Sunday School teacher at Park Place United Methodist Church. He also ran for the House of Delegates in 1958. Mr. White's memberships are too numerous to mention, but included the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association, the Norfolk Jaycees, the National Rifle Association, the Harbor Club and the Norfolk Yacht, and Country Club as well as the Executive Club of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, which he served as a past president. Mr. White was preceded in death by his beloved wife, France Dodson White and their son, Robert Lee White. Left to cherish his memory are his eldest son, Harvey Edison White, III; his youngest son, Randolph Carter White and wife, Julie; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He leaves us all with fond memories of his humor, grace, kindness, and generosity, a true gentleman and Renaissance who will be enormously missed by those who knew him. A graveside service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 12 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, in Charity Cemetery, 4080 Charity Neck Rd., Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Masonic Home of Virginia and American Legion Post 35. Arrangements are under the care of Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Dr. Chapel.
