Victor John Smimo
Victor John Smimo, 95, passes away peacefully with his loving daughter, Cherie and his grandson, Todd by his side at First Call, Thursday, February 9, 2017. His smile and kindness were beloved by anyone who met him and especially by the many pets who loved his tender affection. Victor was born July 21, 1921 in Gloversville, the only child of Grace Holmes Smimo Colen and grew up in Albany, NY attending Albany High School until the onset of WWII. Vic was a talented roller skater in the tri city area before WWII and an avid league and tournament bowler until the age of 90. Vic was a proud WWII Navy Veteran, a member of "The Black Gang" and who received a citation for bravery in the face of the enemy at the pitched naval battle of Leyte Gulf while serving on board of the USS Biloxi. He was also awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal and the Pacific Campaign Medal, European Theatre Medal and the National Defense Medal. He was a Machinist Mate 2nd Class and his love of the sea continued for the rest of his life. On September 30, 1951, Vic married the love of his life, Elvira J. Yeaw Smimo. They were married 60 years until Elvira's death. They had two children, Cherie L. Smimo Rogers and Mark Emerson Smimo. Vic enjoyed camping and fishing with his family, taking Ocean Cruises with his friends and especially enjoyed taking walks with his numerous dogs. Vic was employed by the GAF/BASF in Rensselaer NY Fort Orange Paper Co in Castleton NY and the New York State OGS Albany. Vic was lifelong member of the BPOE # 2073 in East Greenbush NY and the Melvin Roads American Legion Post 1231 in Rensselaer, NY. Vic was predeceased by his mother, Grace Holmes Colen, his wife, Elvira and his son, Mark Smimo. He survived by his daughter, Cherie Smimo Rogers; his dear friend, Ken Monty II; and his grandchildren, Todd Rogers, Deidre (Christopher) Juron, Brad (Jennifer) Pearson; and his eight great-grandchildren, Brad and Hunter Pearson and Zachary, Tessa, Thomas, Cole, Blake and Wyatt Juron. Family and friends are invited to call at the White VanBuren Funeral Home, 1779 Main Street, Delanson on Friday, February 17, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Immediately following Services will begin at the funeral home. Interment will be Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Memory Gardens, Colonie at 10:30 a.m. The family would like to thank the Community Hospice of Amsterdam and the Schenectady Visiting Nurses. In lieu of flowers, Victor requested that donations be made to the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region, 101 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12305 or the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204.
