GORDONVILLE - Funeral services for A.Z. Godwin, 86, will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Gordonville with Rev. Rick Carney officiating. Interment will follow at Gordonville Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service at 1:00 p.m. He passed away on February 8, 2017 with his loving family by his side. Meador Funeral Home of Whitesboro is in charge of arrangements. He was born to A.Z. Godwin, Sr. and Lola (Crain) Godwin on October 21, 1930 in Gordonville. A.Z. was the youngest of four boys. He married Anne Satterfield of Westminster, SC on June 9, 1953. They were married for 63 ½ years. A.Z. lived most of his life in Gordonville, but more recently lived in San Antonio, TX near his son and family. He graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1947. After high school, A.Z. and a friend went to Borger, TX to work for Phillips Oil Company until being drafted into military service in 1951. He served as corporal in the US Army, working in the Motor Pool Division at Ft. Gordon, GA during the Korean War. He retired from the US Postal Service Bulk Billing Division in Dallas, TX in 1990 after 30 years of service. He was also a rancher for 35 years in Gordonville. After retirement, A.Z. continued to be very active with his cattle and maintaining his property in Gordonville. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gordonville for 54 years. He was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class and served as church treasurer, Sunday school clerk, choir member, and church Centennial Committee member. He also served as Gordonville Cemetery administrator. He and his wife, Anne, were caretakers for various family members from 1973 to 2012. A.Z. was a wonderful, loving husband, son, father, and grandfather. His favorite activities included hunting, fishing, and playing dominoes at Travis Flowers' Garage with the Gordonville Gang. A.Z. was a big sports fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and San Antonio Spurs. His Lord and Savior, his church, his family, friends, and country were the most important parts of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers (Carlton, Dennis, and Billy Bob). He was the last surviving member of his family. A.Z. is survived by his wife, Anne; his son, Dr. Greg Godwin and wife Jenni; grandson, Drew Godwin and his wife Leanna; granddaughter, Lainey Godwin-all of San Antonio, TX; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and one sister-in- law. Pallbearers will be Drew Godwin, Scott Godwin, Brandon Hughes, Eddie Womack, Jim Crocker, and Billy Jack Flowers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Keith Hughes, Gene Herron, Roy Holmes, Bowden Tidwell, Dean Dorothy, Noble McElreath, and Leroy Morris. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers for A.Z. at Arden Courts Assisted Living Facility; Coronado Rehabilitation Center; Alpha Senior Care Home; and Gentiva Hospice Care-all of San Antonio.
