In memory of
EDWIN HOLDEN, 92, of Annapolis Maryland and Narragansett Rhode Island, husband of Evelyn Marie (Holmquist) for 54 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved on February 6, 2017 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Born in Tampa Florida, Edwin graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942 where he was the County All-Star football player. He later attended Brown University in Rhode Island where he met his wife Evelyn. Edwin's 32-year military career began when he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 at age 18 and served in World War II and the Korean War. During WWII Edwin was a Corsair and Avenger pilot in the fighter squadron in the South Pacific and served on aircraft carriers including the USS Independence, USS Leyte and USS Essex. Among other battles, he fought in the battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, Iwo Jima and the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. Edwin was honored with many recognitions including: Good Conduct Medal for 6 consecutive years, American Area Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Campaign Medal, WWII Vic, the Navy Occupation Services Metal (Europe), the National Defense Service Medal as a Chief Petty Officer. His Navy service included his enrollment in the Navy Leadership, the Orientation Supply Systems and Registration Logistics. He worked with the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps. through the formation and establishment of the United States Seabees. He was stationed at Jacksonville, Florida, the Maryland Naval Reserve Manpower Center and later at Quonset Point Naval Air Station in Rhode Island. Edwin was the spirit and character of four generations of his Holden family: he is survived by his two sons: Peter of Annapolis and Lynn, of Rhode Island; his grandchildren, Trevor and Jeffrey and his great-grandson Wyatt. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of the Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall Maryland: their dedication and effort to provide quality care over the last 13 months were a heartwarming blessing to the entire family. We are thankful for the gift of his life and service to our country and the blessing of the time we enjoyed and had to spend with him. A memorial gathering will be held honoring Edwin on the occasion of his 93rd birthday on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 4-7pm at the Eastport Yacht Club Club in Annapolis Maryland. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made in Edwin's name to Annapolis Maritime Museum at: www.amaritime.org/donate-online
