The son of Charles and Olivia Hanson, Arthur was born in Wegdahl, Minnesota, in 1922. He is a graduate of Dubuque University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and was ordained on June 15, 1947. He began his ministry with the Board of American Missions in the State of Washington. This was followed by parish work in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, Pastoring seven different churches, concluding with twelve years as Director of Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy with the Lutheran Home and Hospital Association. Along with his call to the chaplaincy, since 1979 he also assisted Pastor John Austin; and in 1990 he was designated as Visitation Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, Maryland.
