In memory of
William John (Bill) Brown
BROWN Mr. William John (Bill) Brown died January 10th at Westminster Woods in Jacksonville, FL, at the age of 92. Bill is survived by three children, Robert, Carol, and Lane Brown, and his stepson, Ray Prevatt, Jr, as well as their spouses, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Bill was born in Jacksonville on Dec. 13, 1924. He served with the 168th Field Artillery Battalion in the Philippines as a cannoneer, receiving an Honorable Discharge. After graduating UF with a BA in 1948, he married Pauline (Polly) Brinson of Olustee. After moving to Chapel Hill, NC in 1950 for his work for Simon & Schuster, he and Polly welcomed their first son, Robert, in 1952. Bill and family returned to Jacksonville in the early '50s, where he became Manager of the Baptist Book Store. In the following years, his daughter, Carol, and son, Lane, were born. Within that period, Bill was a regular panelist on the TV program Sunday School Forum on Channel 4. In 1960, Bill joined the Southern Baptist Convention headquarters in Nashville, TN, as the SE District Manager of Baptist Book Stores, traveling extensively. Called back to Florida in '70 to manage the Baptist Book Store, he rejoined the Sunday School Forum, often as guest host. Passionate about his faith, he edited and authored articles about the Bible. In '71, his book, Practical Help for Teaching the Bible, was published and remains a treasured resource for Bible teachers. After retirement, his wife Polly died, and his new residency at Wesley Manor, currently Westminster Woods at Julington Creek, provided him opportunities volunteering as Bible teacher, assisting the Chaplin, and inspiring other residents. He married Peggy Prevatt in '95. After returning with Peggy to Westminster Woods, he continued his volunteer efforts. Wherever he went, his winning smile and willing generosity gained him many friends and his faith lifted hearts. A funeral is scheduled at Hendricks Ave Baptist Church, 4001 Hendricks Ave, Jacksonville, FL at 1pm on Monday, Jan 16. Pastor Kyle Reese will officiate the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida at 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, 32557, or www.communityhospice.com .
