In memory of
Eldon Sawyer
Eldon Duane Sawyer August 29, 1926 - January 9, 2017 Eldon was born on August 29, 1926 in Lawrence, Kansas to Wilbur and Bessie (Shields) Sawyer. He joined his brother, Vern, and a few years later their sister, Barbara, was born. Eldon spent his youth in Kansas making mischief with his brother. He was given the nickname "Lefty" for being left-handed, and anyone that knew him, called him that. Lighting fires behind the barn was a favorite activity, at least until they were caught. In the early 1940's Wilbur decided to move his family out west to be nearer family, eventually settling in Modesto, California. After graduating from Modesto High School in 1944, Eldon joined the U.S. Army during WWII, Stationed at Camp Roberts, Ca., and was granted an Honorable Discharge in August, 1945. Soon after, Eldon began working at Chancellor and Lyon, a farm equipment store. He met the love of his life, Imogene Brown, at a church function and they were married on January 5, 1947. Eldon and Imogene established their home in Modesto, CA. On August 5, 1948, they welcomed Dennis Duane Sawyer. Duane was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away on October 17, 1950. Their daughter, Susan, was born October 23, 1950. She was a joyful addition, especially since the recent death of baby Duane. Daughter, Sheryl, was added in March, 1952 and son, Craig, in October, 1960. This completed their family. In 1962, Eldon established Eldon D. Sawyer Associates Insurance Services, an independent insurance agency/brokerage firm in downtown Modesto. He and Imogene worked tirelessly together, she as the bookkeeper, to ensure a successful business. Many of their clients became long-time friends. Eldon enjoyed sweets immensely, especially those baked by his wife! He also appreciated firearms and loved to collect tools. He and Imogene spent many weekends taking their children on trips to San Francisco and other locations. He liked to see how things were made so visits to manufacturing plants were often on the schedule, whether it be cars or chocolate. Eldon was an active member of Kiwanis Club and Rotary for many years. He and Imogene were involved as members of First Baptist Church, Modesto, now CrossPoint, soon after their marriage and raised their children there. As time allowed, Eldon and Imogene spent time traveling, especially enjoying trips to British Columbia, Washington, DC for the inauguration of Ronald Reagan and a trip to England, Scotland and Wales. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they took their family on a trip to Hawaii. They also spent much of their time off at their mountain home in Mi-Wuk Village, CA. Eldon is survived by daughter, Sheryl Monday (Dale); son Craig Sawyer (Lisa); son-in-law Thomas Arnemann and seven grandchildren: Meredith Schwartz (Johnnie); Melinda Keller (Mike); Scott Monday (Melissa); Meghan Arnemann; Braedon Sawyer; Breanna Sawyer, Sarah Lynne Sawyer, thirteen great-grandchildren and his sister, Barbara Wood. Eldon was predeceased by his wife, Imogene, his son, Duane, his daughter, Susan Arnemann, his parents and his brother, Verne Sawyer, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
