TOOMER MARY ELIZABETH RATIGAN TOOMER (Age 66) Passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Her large and loving family takes comfort in remembering her vibrancy and joy for life. Mary was born in Sanford, Florida, April 13, 1950 and was the daughter of John Hugh Ratigan and Beatrice Slavin Ratigan. Although she was the sixth of eight children, Mary was never at a loss for confidence and developed a strong sense of purpose and personal style at a very early age. Her infectious sense of humor was often responsible for getting her siblings into trouble for laughing at inopportune moments. Following her graduation from Wayne County High School in Jesup, Georgia, Mary earned her Bachelor's degree from North Georgia College. After earning her Master's degree from North Carolina State, Mary moved to Washington, DC to pursue her career in higher education. Always petite but never intimidated, Mary was a strong advocate for, and demanding of, the student-athletes she counseled. Mary transitioned to adult education and retired as an adminis- trator of the Fairfax County Public Schools Adult Education program. It was while she was in Washington, DC that Mary met the love of her life and future husband, Nick. Together she and Nick raised their children in Burke, Virginia where the loving home they created and their active involvement in their children's lives helped them in turn create successful lives. At retirement, Mary and Nick chose to move south to Atlanta, Georgia to be closer to family. Ultimately they split their time between Sarasota, Florida, where they led an active social life with a devoted group of friends and Atlanta, Georgia where they reveled in their roles as GiGi and PopPop to their grandchildren. Mary is survived by her husband of 36 years, Nicholas Anthony Toomer;, her children, Jason Anthony Toomer (Libby), Kimberly Anne Toomer, Lauren Toomer Walsh (John) and Nicholas Anthony Toomer, Jr.; grandchildren, Jason Anthony Toomer, Jr., Madison Elizabeth Toomer, Jack Nicholas Walsh, Connor Michael Walsh and Meghan Victoria Walsh; her sisters, Patty Ratigan Conroy (Bill), Lynn Ratigan Smith (Charlie), Margie Bannister and Nancy Ratigan; her brother, Donal Richard Ratigan (Cathy); and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, John Hugh Ratigan, Jr. and her sister, Kay Ratigan Benedict. Mary's infectious laughter, sense of style, passion for dancing, and love of family and friends will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 17 10:30 am at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mount Vernon Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338 and a reception will follow the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to honor Mary's volunteer work by requesting memorial gifts to the Make-A-Wish Foundation at: http://
