In memory of
Charles Avery Keown
Bowling Green Keown, Charles Avery, Charles Avery Keown, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 12th, 2017 at his home in Bowling Green, Ky. Born on October 29, 1924 in Hancock County, Kentucky to the late Arnold and Alma (Reardon) Keown, Charles was a graduate of WKU and earned his Masters degree at University of Kentucky. A veteran of World War II (1943-45), he was a Medic assigned to the 460th Bomb Group, Army Air Force, based in Italy. After returning to the U.S., he married his high school sweetheart, the former Jewell Arington and, upon graduating from UK, they settled in Bowling Green where he became a professor of Agriculture Economics at WKU. In 1956, he accepted the position as Westerns first Dean of Students and embarked on a 30 year career as a visionary leader. He was dedicated to improving the student experience, mentoring and counseling thousands at WKU. While Dean, he helped establish and oversaw the Associated Student Government, WKU Greek system, University Center Board, Black Student Union and a comprehensive residence hall system. Charles was also active off-campus as past Board member of the Salvation Army, President of Bowling Green Little-League, President of the Warren County Agriculture Council and Sunday school teacher at Forest Park Baptist Church and First Baptist Church. Charlie, as his friends knew him, loved the outdoors…jogging, gardening, hunting, fishing, canoeing, and camping. It was on memorable camping trips to the Smoky Mountains, Outer Banks, N.C., and Florida Keys that he passed on that love to his children. An avid reader who loved travel, he retired in 1985 to enjoy his books and trips with Jewell. Anyone who had the good fortune of meeting Charlie will miss his wit, wisdom, fairness and caring nature. His good nature endured to the very end…greeting anyone with a smile and a wave. He was blessed to remain in the home he built until his passing. We wish to offer special thanks to the many caregivers over the years, especially Susan, Ashley, Mary, Terri, and Traci. In addition to his parents, Charles is predeceased by his grandparents Lem and Katherine Reardon, his wife of 63 years, Jewell Keown; son Mike Keown, and sisters Jesse Lee Arnold and Catherine VanVactor. He is survived by daughter Pam Folmar, Bowling Green; son Greg Keown (Ashley), Louisville, KY; seven grandchildren: Stefanie Popplewell (Craig), Bowling Green; Jennifer Bookstaff (Blake), Knoxville, TN; Michael Keown (Jessica), Scottsdale, AZ; Krista Walsworth (Geoff), Henderson, NV; Sean Folmar (Mary Campbell), Nashville, TN; Charlie and Caroline Keown, Louisville, KY; six great grandchildren and a host of extended family. Visitation will be Monday, January 16th from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at J.C. Kirby and Son, Lovers Lane Chapel, 820 Lovers Lane, Bowling Green, KY with a memorial service at 2:00 PM. A private family burial will be held Tuesday. In Lieu of flowers, the family request Donations be made to Hosparus or Norton Children's Hospital
