Nancy BAER
BAER, Nancy Lee Nancy Lee Baer, 71, long time resident of Atlanta, passed away Friday, November 11, 2016. Born in Sikeston, Missouri, she grew up in Somerville, New Jersey, Nancy attended college in Chico, California and graduated from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Nancy was a Senior Manager in the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Service (DFCS). She oversaw the renovations and building of new offices; she learned about computers so she could produce the many statistical reports required to run the complex agency. She oversaw the multi-million dollar budget for food stamps, welfare, and Medicaid to ensure that people could buy food, pay the rent, and see a doctor. Nancy improved the lives of many in Fulton County and inspired those who worked with her and will live on in the lives of those she touched. Nancy created and endowed the Catherine D. Harvey Legacy Fund to provide resources to help struggling individuals and families become self-sustaining. She was quietly devoted to Emmaus House, working all year long to procure toys, games, gloves, hats, and blankets to ensure a joyous Christmas for the population it serves. Many other projects and charities frequently benefited from her talents and generosity. Nancy had a gift for bringing people together and organizing parties large and small to attend theater and concerts, enjoy seasonal activities, and share great food. Her friends eagerly anticipated her annual October luncheon which was know for its special group outing followed by a lovely meal and lively conversation. She helped retirees from DFCS stay in contact by organizing annual luncheons and sharing information. She was a gifted landscaper, as demonstrated by her enviable yard. Friends and neighbors were always delighted with the whimsical blow-ups and clever yard art she displayed. She worked with other members of the Church of the Epiphany to redesign the landscape at Epiphany Memorial Garden, making it a beautiful and peaceful place. Nancy was an avid bridge player and fierce poker player. She liked to watch women's basketball and play golf. She traveled fearlessly and extensively. She liked action/adventure movies, especially the ones with dragons. She loved to read books and listen to mystery stories in her car. Most of all she was devoted to her beloved pets, Katie and Abbie. Nancy was generous and funny, a great sister and friend. She was a living example of the power of joy, kindness, friendship and laughter. She thoroughly enjoyed her family and was devoted to her friends.
