In memory of
Wayne Hermes
Wayne J. Hermes Wayne Joseph Hermes 87, of Shreveport, died at home of natural causes on January 11, 2017. He grew up in Shreveport and after graduating from Fair Park High School, began working as a union glass cutter at Libbey Owens Ford, where his father, brothers, and grandfather had worked since the turn of the century. He worked there for twenty-five years. He subsequently enjoyed a lengthy corporate career for Church's Fried Chicken, Inc. learning the business from the ground up as an assistant store manager and store manager. He was promoted through the years to the positions of area manager, district manager, and, finally, division manager (corporate VP) in Houston, Texas. He retired to Longview, Texas in 1989 and purchased two Church's franchises which he sold in 1996. He and his wife, Carolyn Virginia Houston of Shreveport, were married in 1948. They were active parishioners at several Catholic churches in Shreveport (St. Theresa, Sacred Heart, and St. John's Cathedral) as well as in Monroe LA, Houston, and Longview. At St. Matthew's in Longview they were daily communicants and devoted supporters of the parish Adoration Chapel. They were also dedicated to the service of the poor and other charitable activities in the parish. In retirement they traveled the country extensively, often by RV, including a lengthy trip to Alaska. They also visited Mexico, Italy, and Switzerland. Particularly important to them were the numerous trips around the country to visit their children and grandchildren, especially for their many first communions, confirmations, and graduation ceremonies. They moved back to Shreveport in February 2015. Mr. Hermes was preceded in death by his parents Harry Herman Hermes and Mary Eugenia Disiere and his brothers, John Albert Hermes, Harold Franklin Hermes, and Harry Herman Hermes, Jr. He is survived by siblings Robert Hermes, Maureen Hermes Byrd (Paul), Elmer Clarence Hermes (Sue); his wife of 68 years, Carolyn Virginia Houston; their eight children, Terry Hermes (Lisa) of Birmingham, Alabama, Wayne "Dubba" Hermes, Jr. (Sharon) of Durango, Colorado, Victoria Hermes Willis of Crosby, Texas, Dr. Ronald Hermes (Belinda) of Shreveport, Louisiana, Timothy Hermes (Niki) of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania; Patrick Hermes of Arlington, Virginia; Reverend Richard Hermes, S.J., of Tampa, Florida; Lawrence Hermes (Lara) of Katy, Texas; 21 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered by relatives, friends, colleagues and employees for his quiet, kind, and gentle spirit. Honoring Mr. Hermes as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chris Willis, Justin Hermes, Jake Hermes, Brendan Hermes, Zach Hermes, Ryan Hermes, Colin Hermes, Andrew Hermes, and Jack Hermes. Two grandsons, Clint Hermes and Dylan Hermes, will be honorary pallbearers. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a brief vigil service at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, LA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Berchmans Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2017, with burial to follow at Forest Park East Cemetery. The family suggests donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 5001 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
