LUCILE (HIGBEE) WYSS, 91, of Fort Wayne, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at The Cedars, Leo, Ind. Born in Branch County, Mich., on Oct. 1, 1925, she graduated from Montgomery (Michigan) High School in 1943. Lucile, known affectionately as Lucy, had a lifelong love of music. During and after her school years, she studied guitar, voice, and piano, singing and playing guitar with local bands. In later years, Lucy and Maury frequently danced polka with a group of friends who avidly followed the Marv Herzog Band around the area, even traveling along to Florida and Europe on the band's tours. She was a dedicated school bus driver for 18 years, serving with Fort Wayne Community Schools. Each year, she enthusiastically collected coins in support of radio station WOWO's annual Penny Pitch, driving downtown in her big, yellow bus, proudly presenting the donation. More than once, she was put on the air. Lucy was an active volunteer for more than 25 years. As members of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, Lucy and Maury helped with the count of the weekly collections. In addition, they both spent many hours working at the funeral dinners, to which Lucy contributed her delicious homemade pies. They worked together at the monthly fish fry at the Knights of Columbus. Lucy regularly helped out with social activities and at bingo games at the VA Hospital, where Maury volunteered every week. Lucy loved cooking and baking, always experimenting with new recipes. Her gifts of her famous caramel corn and peanut brittle were eagerly anticipated by her many neighbors, friends and family members. She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Maurice "Maury" J. Wyss of Leo; daughter, Sue Ann Rupp (Josh Ingojo) of San Francisco, Calif.; as well as her dear sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews, by whom she will be remembered for her infectious laughter and witty sense of humor. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hazel (Case) Higbee; infant daughter, Cynthia Kay Rupp; and three brothers, Elson, LaVern and Elmer. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7215 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne (IN 46835), with visitation one hour prior. Father Mark Gurtner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Masses, Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, or donations may be made to Penny Pitch, 2915 Maples Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46816. Interment at Lester Cemetery, Branch County, Mich.
