Ralph M. Cugowski Captain Ralph M. Cugowski, US Navy Retired, was born in Montgomery, Alabama on August 10, 1941 and passed away September 7, 2016 in Frisco, Texas. When he was 2 years old Ralph's family moved to Dothan, Alabama where he graduated from Dothan High School in 1959. Ralph then attended Auburn Univeristy and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Archaitecture degree and after completing Officer Candidate School in June 1965 was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy's Civil Engineer Corps. His first duty station was at Marine Corps Air Facility in Futema, Okinawa. While stationed in Okinawa, Ralph met Hana, his wife of 50 years. Subsequent Navy assignments included Public Works Officer at the Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, California and service in Navy Mobile construction Battalions 128 and 133 where he held positions as Assistant Operations Officer, Company Commander and Officer in charge of a deployed detail. In 1972, Ralph completed postgraduate school at the Georgia institute of technology, receiving a Master of Science degree in Construction Management. After graduating, he and his family moved to Maryland where he became Special Programs Officer for the Chesapeake Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The highlight of Ralph's naval career was serving as Commanding Officer of the Presidential Retreat at Camp David, Maryland from 1977 until 1981, overlapping the administrations of President Carter and President Reagan. Other duty stations included Seal Beach, California, Gulfport, Mississippi, China Lake, California and Pensacola, Florida. Ralph's military career also included two tours of duty in Vietnam. Throughout his service years, Ralph received numerous awards, commendations and decorations. Ralph retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1993 at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. He and Hana then moved to Frisco, Texas in September of 2011 to be near their daughter, Yukari, and her family. After retirement Ralph continued to enjoy playing gold and found a new interest in baking - bread was his specialty. He also enjoyed reading, music, visiting with his many friend and enjoying his Porsche! Ralph was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Margaret Cugowski, and his daughter, Yukari Higgins. He is survived by his wife Hana of Frisco, Texas, his son-in-law, Jim Higgins and granddaughter Amanda Higgins, of Plano, Texas. He is missed by all of his numerous friends and acquaintances who enjoyed his humorous, helpful nature and big smile and laughter. There will be a graveside service with Honor Guard for Ralph at 11:00 am. on January 13th, 2017 at the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.
