In memory of
Mae Merritt Mae Merritt, passed away on Jan. 1, 2017, at the age of 92. Mae was born in Pittsburgh, PA, grew up in Philadelphia and as a young adult traveled cross country, eventually settling in Los Angeles, CA, where she lived until coming to Tallahassee in 2012. She was predeceased by her sister, Deborah Malaney and brother, Harry Merritt. She is survived by her niece, Laurel Hall (Pat) and their daughters, Molly and Elley and her nephew, Wayne Malaney (Darlene) and their son, Donnie Sterling and daughter, Dayna Sterling; Dottie McDougal (Mark) and, grandnieces Tara, Kendra & Morgan. MAE was a woman ahead of her time. She traveled throughout the country before starting a career. During WWII, while in her late teens and early 20s she provided support to our servicemen in El Paso and later worked in an aircraft plant where she designed the solution for keeping exhaust out of the cockpits coming from center mounted front engines of fighter planes. Mae enjoyed a very successful career in the fashion/clothing industry. She started as a buyer for the May Company and later started her own business, representing a variety of clothing manufacturers, until her retirement. During this career she lived in LA and NY and enjoyed frequent travel to Japan and China. She was a strong, independent woman, always up for an adventure or challenge and never too old to take on a project, whether at her church or helping a friend put down wood floors at 80. She taught herself golf, traveled to the Holy Land and had a life centered on her faith and family. The other constant in her life, besides faith, was her unwavering support of her beloved Philadelphia Phillies. She loved God, her dog Luke, and California. A memorial service will be held at St. Augustine Plantation Assisted Living, 2507 Old St. Augustine Rd., Tallahassee, on January 12, 2017 at noon. She will be interred later at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA. Todd Wahlquist with Bevis Funeral Home is assisting the family with their arrangements. 850-385-2193, www.bevisfh.com
