In memory of
Virginia Alice (Land) Michael
Virginia Alice Michael, 90, passed away on Dec. 27, 2016. She was born August 10, 1926 to George Cleveland Land and Alice Helmer Land. Virginia was the sixth of seven children growing up in Los Angeles during the Great Depression. At the age of 16, Virginia met and married Charles Bent Michael. The couple moved to Baldwin Park, California, where they raised four children. In 1962 Chuck and Virginia moved to Costa Mesa, California and opened their own business, Michael's Lapidary in Garden Grove, California. Virginia ran the business. She was a strong and savvy businesswoman who loved telling stories to her many regular customers. She never forgot the hardships of the Depression and would frequently squirrel away cash in odd places around the house. Virginia gave generously to friends and family. She would whisper "check the pockets" after gifting something and delighted when hidden treasures were discovered. Virginia loved spending time with her family. She frequently hosted holiday gatherings at her home and could be counted on to organize huge family reunions. She never forgot a birthday and always called family and friends to wish them happy birthday. She was an avid genealogist who loved researching her family's history and organizing her discoveries for the next generation. When Chuck passed away in 1987, Virginia sold the "rock shop" (as her grandchildren were fond of calling it) and settled into retirement. Quilting was her passion. She spent many hours each day in her quilting studio and made sure everyone in the family received a handmade quilt. In 2003, Virginia moved to Colville to be closer to her oldest daughter. Here, she continued to enjoy her love of quilting and using a walker, traveled several blocks to her favorite coffee shop each day to share stories with and enjoy the company of new friends. In 2010 Virginia moved to Parkview Assisted Living where she enjoyed bingo and crafts with the close friends she always called family. Virginia is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bent Michael; by her parents, Cleve and Alice Land; brothers, James Land and Murray Land; sisters, Helen Federovitz, Margaret Burnett, Kathleen Schow and Norah Wahrenbrock. She was the last of her generation in our family. She is survived by her children, Charlotte Sweeney, Lorraine Michael, Penny Sullivan and David Michael; six grandchildren, Gina Welch, Michele Moffitt, Christine Sweeney, Michael Sweeney, Dawn Hagler and Matthew Sullivan, and her friend, Patrick Hunter. Virginia had 15 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
