Mary Jo Pate 1920 - 2017 Our precious mother, Mary Jo Pate, passed away on March 8, 2017. She left this world with the ease and grace that she lived every day. Mary Jo was born May 27, 1920 in Hoyt, Kansas on her parents' farm. She was the 3rd of 6 children. Mary Jo is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and May Pettijohn and her siblings, William Lincoln Pettijohn, Sarah Elizabeth Tolin and Thomas Pettijohn. She is survived by her brother, Jack Pettijohn and sister, Katherine Cox. She is also survived by her children, Stephen Pate, Deborah Hendren, Rebecca Nissen, (husband Steve and grandsons Nathan, Matthew, Jordan), Catherine Vanderpol (husband Ron Vanderpol); grandsons, Colter Nowlin (wife Krystle, grandsons Will, Nate) Jonathan Nowlin (wife Melissa, grandson Ben), Casey Nowlin (wife, Amanda, grandsons Eli and Lincoln), Grey Vanderpol (wife Jackie, Jayce) Savannah Vanderpol, Shannon Cramer (husband Erik, grandson Alex); and her exchange student daughter, Beth Coutinho Penalva. In 1942 Mary Jo graduated from Christ Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. In 1943 she joined the Navy Nurse Corp serving for three years and was a Lieutenant at the time of her discharge. She was stationed in San Diego, Honolulu, and Philadelphia military hospitals taking care of WWII servicemen. After her service to her country she then went back to school and graduated from Washburn University. In 1947 she married and moved to Pensacola, Florida where she loved being a homemaker and caring for her children. She joined the Pensacola Garden Club in 1951 and was an active member even at the time of her death. In 1957 she became a master flower show Judge Emeritus. Mary Jo enjoyed all types of dancing including ballroom, round dancing and line dancing, but she especially loved clogging. After her children were grown she and her husband enjoyed taking international trips to England, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Thailand and Brazil. Family was the center of her heart. She was a quiet lady, slow to judge people and chose to see the best in people. She loved the beauty of nature and found peace watching birds, gardening and admiring the creations of God. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Pastor Casey Nowlin and Pastor Mike Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday.
