Elias William "Eli" Saleeby
ELIAS "ELI" WILLIAM SALEEBY Elias William Saleeby, affectionately known as "Eli", age 90, died peacefully on Monday, October 17th surrounded by his family at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. He was born on July, 18th, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Wadih Simon Saleeby, and Alice Saleeby. He was preceded in death by two sisters Mary and Jean. Mr. Saleeby served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the Pickaway attack transport, Emberle Destroyer Escort and Kyne destroyer. He was a Signalman Second Class. He travelled the world for the Episcopal Church and was very proud of his decoration for humanitarian efforts from President William Tubman, of Liberia, West Africa, in July of 1966. During his travels, he met his beautiful wife, Philomene, of 57 years while he was building a school in Haiti. After his travels, he settled in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was the comptroller for the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church in New York City. He is survived by his wife, Philomene, his three daughters, Marie Alice Bossut of Wilmington, NC, Claudette Miller (Andrew) of Charlotte, NC., and Leslie Stachowicz (Brian) of Wilmington, NC, 6 grandchildren, Camille, Hannah, Eli, Aidan, Cooper, and Henry, and his sisters Gladys, and Laurice, and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Friday, October 21st at Andrews Mortuary Chapel on Market Street, and interment will follow at the Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank the Lower Cape Fear Hospice for all of their support, compassion, and dedication to his dignity and comfort.
