She was born in Durham and was a daughter of John Arch Campbell (died 1970) and Jessie Leona Younts Campbell (died 1951). She was of Scotch-Irish and German ancestry. Doris was raised near Erwin Mills in West Durham and attended Southside School, E.K. Powe School, and Durham High School. She was employed with Erwin Mills and during World War II worked at Wright Automatic Machinery Company in Durham making parts for the war effort. After the conflict she was employed for thirty-one years at Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company. Always a hard worker, Doris devoted her life to the betterment of her family. Doris was married to Durham native Edwin Jackson Massengill, who predeceased her in 1981. She was also preceded in death by her sister Dorothy C. Nash and her brother Glenn Reid Campbell. Doris is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Doris moved to Springmoor in 1987 and spent many wonderful years as an independent resident. Since entering the health care facility she has received much appreciated care by the well-trained staff. We especially wish to thank Gwen Echavez, Jill Spencer, and Kakisha Speight for assisting Doris during the last decade of her life. Doris worshipped at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham and White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. A memorial service conducted by Springmoor Chaplain Phyllis Mayo will be held in the Dining Room on the second floor of Stewart Health Center at Springmoor Retirement Community, 1500 Sawmill Road in Raleigh on Friday, October 21 at 2:30.
