She married Ronald George Lockwood, a WWII USAF Staff Sergeant, on January 20, 1945, came to Joliet in 1946, and became a U.S. citizen in 1952. Doris was a gifted artist and craftswoman. Working in various mediums, she produced paintings and drawings, as well as intricate paper tole, and decoupage. For over forty years, she was also a respected antique furniture restorer and master upholsterer, where her training as a fine seamstress in Italy helped her create intricate fabric finishes. In addition, she was an extraordinary Italian cook, her specialties being homemade pastas and sauces, and she was an early member of the popular Joliet YMCA water ballet troupe. Doris was a long-time parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet, and volunteered for many years at the Daybreak Shelter for the homeless. She is remembered for her commitment to equality for all people and a kind generosity to those in need. She undoubtedly served as a surrogate mother and grandmother to countless people over the years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald George Lockwood; son, Ronald Anthony Lockwood; parents, Amedeo and Marta (nee Tempesta) Principi; brother and sister-in-law, Pasquale and Sonia Principi; and brothers-in-law, Gino Martellotta and Kenneth Lockwood. She will be missed by the countless friends she made throughout her long life. Donations to Joliet Area Community Hospice, St. Joseph Catholic Church of Joliet, or Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, would be greatly appreciated.
