Robert Burchhardt
Robert Burchhardt, 69, of Tully , NY passed away on October 16, 2016, surrounded by loved ones. After over a year of battling glioblastoma he has found peace. Robert is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diana, son James "Junior" Burchhardt, son Thomas (Kathleen) Burchhardt and granddaughter Ginevieve Hope Burchhardt. He is also survived by his sister Sylvia (Albie) Butler of New Mexico as well as many much-loved aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. After graduation from Oneonta High School in 1965 he continued his education at Hudson Valley CC and received his bachelor's degree from SUNY Oneonta. Robert then joined the Navy's AOC program where he learned his flying skills. After leaving active duty he became a commercial pilot and served in the NISR until he retired as a Commander from the Navy Reserves. During his career he instructed at the Norfolk Navy Flying Club, flew with Empire, Piedmont and US Airways. He very much enjoyed flying and traveling. His hobbies were many and included planes, trains and automobiles as well as carpentry, gardening, and reading, but above all he loved being with his family. Friends and family loved his quick wit and appreciation of a good story. This allowed him to share a smile even through the difficult times. Calling hours will be held on Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street in Cortland, NY from 10 am to noon. Funeral Services will be held immediately after. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society with a designation for research. The local office is 6725 Lyons Street, PO Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
