In memory of
Clemburn Luffman Balch
Balch, Clemburn Luffman ascended to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on October 16, 2016, at the age of 92. Clem was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Augusta Balch; brothers Benjamin, Homer and Howard Balch; sisters Lavira Hall and Murrel Bernard. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Elizabeth (Scherer); son Derek Balch, Endwell; daughter Barbara Lis and husband Edwin, Endicott; grandson Matthew Balch, Syracuse; granddaughter Kimberlee Van Horn and husband Matthew; great granddaughter Ivy Elizabeth, Endicott; many nieces, nephews and cousins across the country; two sister in laws Brenda Balch and Barbara McDaniel. At the young age of 17, Clem answered his country's call to duty and enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Following training at Camp Lejeune, he was assigned to the Ellice Islands in the South Pacific. Following his discharge at the end of the war, he returned to Broome County where he met his future wife Elizabeth. Following a whirlwind courtship, they married in 1946 and moved to Endwell. There he became a lifelong member of the Endwell United Methodist Church. Clem went to work for IBM and retired from there after 38 years. In retirement, he always kept active doing painting, small construction jobs and household repairs for the elderly. He was always ready to help when someone needed a hand and really enjoyed doing so. An avid outdoorsman, Clem enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout the NY and PA region. He divided his vacation time between his two favorite spots, the Adirondack Mountains, especially Schroon Lake, and the Jersey Shore. A dog lover, he always had a pet dog by his side, especially his favorite, Dino. A Memorial Service will be held at the Endwell United Methodist Church, 3301 Watson Boulevard, Endwell, on Thursday at 3:00pm. At the family's request, there will be no calling hours. The family would like to send their sincere appreciation to the wonderful caring staff of the Pine Unit, at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, NY, where he was a resident for the past 3 ½ years.
