In memory of
Joan Callagy
Joan Callagy POUGHKEEPSIE - Joan Marie Callagy, of Poughkeepsie, devoted wife of Faustin Callagy, who survives her, and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully on October 17, 2016. A proud daughter of the Bronx, she was born Joan Van Nuis on September 18, 1929 at the Bronx Hospital and grew up in her mother's extended family, the Stocks, with her beloved mother, Viola, and her sister, Ruth. She cherished them always. Life challenged her early. At age 6 a Christmas Eve fire burned her over much of her body. Through months in the hospital and for the rest of her life she grew in her gifts. She attended St. Angela Merici School in the Bronx and Cathedral High School in Manhattan. While attending St. Angela's, at age 12, she met schoolmate and neighbor Faustin Callagy on 164th Street. Although Faustin went away to the Marist Preparatory School in Esopus they had fallen in love and were married Jan. 6, 1951. Their four sons survive her. In 1965 they left the Bronx for Islandia, Long Island and in 2001 she and Faustin moved to Poughkeepsie to be nearer to children and grandchildren. After working at Bell Telephone, for many years Joan organized and efficiently ran the copy and printing services for the Central Islip School District on Long Island. She cared about her work and her co-workers. People came to her for a sympathetic ear and for counsel. Joan had many gifts: fight, faith, wit, laughter, a pitch-perfect voice, grace in swimming, an encyclopedic memory, steadfastness, forthrightness, and willingness to grow. She walked like she meant it and loved to travel with family and friends: Ireland, Italy, France, the Bronx. She loved food and never forgot a meal. And then, the movies. Betty Davis could do no wrong and "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca gave her and Faustin their love song. Along with family, Church, and joyful meals Joan passionately loved music. She filled her home with her beautiful renditions of popular song, hymns, and Christmas carols and delighted in the vocal and instrumental music her children and grandchildren brought to home and community. In the end, Joan quoted the gospels more than she did any Hollywood star and her joy and her faith were closely tied. She hoped for heaven which will now ring with her laugh as she leads a Conga line. She is survived by her husband, Faustin Callagy; her beloved sister, Ruth; her sons and their spouses: Stephen and Agnes, Paul and Carolyn, Christopher and Margaret, Francis and Anne; her grandchildren: Stephen, Matthew, and Sarah; Conor, Ronan, and Nora; Maeve, Shannon, and Fiona; Malcolm and Rose; her great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Aedan and Madelyn; her nieces and nephews: Joan Gleason, Douglas Callagy, Susan Leva, Ellen Hayes, Mary Anne Rebehn, Joseph Callagy, Barbara Callagy, Gregory Callagy, Jacqueline Moore, Elizabeth Callagy, and John Callagy. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Parmele, Auchmoody and Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie, at 10:15 a.m. Friday, October 21, 2016. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 62 LaGrange Avenue, Poughkeepsie.
