In memory of
Thomas McWaters Armitage
On October 15, 2016 Thomas McWaters Armitage, 69, passed away at his home with loved ones by his side. Tom was born July 9, 1947 in Bogalusa, Louisiana and grew up in Folsom, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas McWaters Armitage, Jr. and his mother, Mary Ellen Peterson Armitage. Tom graduated from Covington High School in 1965 and received a bachelor's degree in horticulture from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now ULL, in 1971. Mr. Armitage began his 34 year career at Tulane University in 1977 as an instructor of landscape architecture. Later he became Grounds Superintendent. Tom initiated the first master plan for landscaping the Tulane campus. The use of Louisiana native plants became a focus in the university landscape, and Tulane's participation with Parkway Partners was established. The Arbor Day Foundation recognized Tulane a number of times as Tree Campus, USA in honor of the university's program on behalf of its historic live oaks. After Katrina, Mr. Armitage was recognized several times by the university for his efforts in saving Tulane's beautiful trees, especially the oaks, when they became endangered from the brackish water that flooded the campus. When Mr. Armitage retired in 2014, The Armitage Oak, identified with a plaque, was planted in his honor along an avenue of oaks dedicated to those who have made significant contributions to Tulane University. In his spare time, Tom enjoyed gardening, fishing with cousins and friends, and golfing with his son and brother-in-law. Mr. Armitage is survived by his wife, Cynthia Swan, son Joseph A. Armitage, New Orleans; sister, Suellen Armitage Eyre (Gary A. Eyre), Phoenix, Arizona; Paula K. Osborn (first marriage) and husband Randall Osborn, Mandeville, Louisiana. Relatives and friends are invited to attend services at The Chapel of the Holy Spirit, 1100 Broadway, New Orleans, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 22, 2016. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow services at Newcomb Hall plaza on the Tulane campus. Condolences and fond memories may be shared at
