In memory of
Anne Murphy
MURPHY Anne (Brennan), 91, of Westerly, RI and formerly Bergenfield, NJ, was the second youngest of ten children born to Anne (Kelly) and Owen Brennan in Roscommon, Ireland. She described an idyllic childhood growing up on a farm along the River Shannon. As a young adult, she left Ireland and moved for work to London, England, where she met her future husband, Michael J. Murphy, and had two sons and a daughter. In 1961, they immigrated to the United States and made their home in Bergenfield, New Jersey, where they had their youngest son. Anne was very proud of her nursing career in obstetrics and gynecology at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, NJ. She was an active member of the Irish American Social Club in Bergenfield, NJ. Later in her adult life she became a gifted golfer with her husband; they enjoyed many years together on the links. She was the Women's Champion in 1993 as a member at the Broadacres Golf Club in Orangeburg, NY. She joined Winnapaug Country Club after moving to Westerly, RI in 1997. Anne was also an avid knitter and gardener. For years she was known at the Westerly Warm Shelter as the "Banana Bread Lady" because she routinely baked and donated her banana bread for residents. Since moving to Westerly, she was a member of St. Clare Church in Misquamicut and the Helping Hands Ministry. The activist inside her inspired Anne to successfully lead the effort with the state to install a cross-walk in front of the Cooked Goose on Watch Hill Road in Westerly. Her kindness and generous spirit will be missed by many. Anne is predeceased by her husband, Michael J. Murphy Sr. and two sons, Gari Murphy of Englewood, FL and Shaun D. Murphy of Marion, SC and Bergenfield, NJ. She is survived by one brother Owen (Dottie) Brennan of Mountainside, NJ, her son, Michael J. Murphy Jr (Myra) of Orleans, MA, daughter, Marie-Anne Murphy Leinhaas (Paul) of Westerly, RI, daughter-in-law Cathy Murphy (Englewood, FL), and ten grandchildren; Shelby Stockdale (Rotonda West, FL), Michael Previtire and Tim Previtire (VA Beach, VA), Emma Leinhaas (NY, NY), Siobhan Murphy (NY, NY), Melissa Murphy (Leonia, NJ), Shannon Murphy (San Diego, CA.), Stephen Brennan Leinhaas (Baltimore, MD and Westerly, RI), Shaun Murphy, Jr. (Bergenfield, NJ), six great-grand children and many loving nieces and nephews across the United States and in Ireland. The family wishes to thank Dr. Job Sandoval, the staff at the Elms, the Clipper, the Royal Westerly Nursing Home and Hope Hospice. Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home at 121 Main Street Westerly, RI 02891 will be handling the funeral arrangements.
