In memory of
Alma Belle Jones
On Monday, October 10, 2016, Alma Jones, 91 of Burlington, WA left her earthly home to rest in the arms of Jesus. She was surrounded by family who loved her dearly and was visited by nearly all of her grandchildren the day she passed away. A large hole was left in our hearts, but we are confident she is happy and glad to be in her heavenly home at last. Alma was born in Parkersburg, WV on April 23, 1925 to George and Bessie Payne. The Payne's moved across the country when Alma was 3 years old and she grew up in Sunnyside, WA. Alma joined a large loving family and the stories she could tell kept us all entertained! She graduated from Mt. Baker HS after their family moved to the coast in her junior year. Alma was a Christian all of her life, meeting her future husband, Herbert at a church picnic in Sedro-Woolley. They were married on June 9, 1943 and raised their 2 daughters, Sandy & Becky for a short while in Darrington before settling in Burlington. They shared 65 years of life together before his passing in 2008. Alma worked as an Optician for most of her career. She worked with Dr. Mulholland in Sedro-Woolley for most of those years and they remained life-long friends after they retired. In 1976 Herb and Alma moved to Whatcom Co. and then to Anchorage, AK for a short while. Following their retirement, they traveled the country in their Holiday Rambler, eventually settling into their home in Mt. Vernon, where she lived until about 2 ½ years ago. Alma was a wonderful mother. She was a hands on Mom and she watched over her daughters and their families lovingly. All we had to do was ask, and she was there. She loved being a mother and a Grandma. Her grandchildren never doubted their Grandma loved them, and she was still praying for them into her last days. She was a faithful friend to many, even putting her own life on hold to care for one of them for several months until that friend passed away. Many wonderful meals and games of hearts were shared around her table. It wasn't unusual to go home with a loaf of warm bread or leftovers. She loved being able to worship with her church family in Mt. Vernon. A special thanks to Larry & Joyce Aungst who helped make that happen. Alma is survived by her daughter Sandy Renfro of Kendall and her daughter & son-in-law Becky & Joe Williamson of Burlington. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Ronda & Travis Esau of Abbotsford, BC, Todd Palmer & Shelley Duke of Kendall, Lynne & Michael Cunningham of Kendall, John & Karla Williamson of Sedro-Woolley, Darren & Melody Williamson of Salem, OR, Darcey & Jamie Zapien of Blaine, Mandy & Jerry Deleon of Kendall, Robb & Magen Williamson of Weatherford, TX and Adam and Paula Williamson of Nassau, Bahamas. She also held the hearts of 29 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, her parents, 8 brothers & sisters and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held for Alma at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Skagit Valley Church of Christ, 215 So. Gardner Rd., Burlington, WA. Family and friends are invited to come and celebrate her life. Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA.
