Bernard De Pol
Captain Bernard John De Pol of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016 with his loving and devoted family by his side. He was born in Delawanna, NJ on April 1, 1925. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Rutherford, NJ, he enlisted in the Marines and was placed in the V12 program at Princeton University. After he was discharged he graduated from UCLA with a BA in Psychology. He used his GI bill to pursue his passion for flying. Bernie became a civilian flight instructor for the Air Force teaching cadets to fly in the T-6 Texan. He met his devoted wife, Lucille Stellavato, in 1953. They were married one year later and he became a flight instructor at Teterboro Airport. He was hired by American Airlines in 1956 and retired after almost 30 years in 1985. He retired to Florida where he continued to pursue his love for flying in his Beechcraft Bonanza A36 until the age of 80. He was active in the American Bonanza Society, Gray Eagles, and The Royal Palm Yacht Club. He and his wife, Lu, traveled frequently on their Chris Craft throughout Florida and the Bahamas. Bernie was preceded in death by his father, John De Pol and mother, Beatrice De Pol; his brothers, Edward and Leonard De Pol. He is survived by his wife, Lucille De Pol, of 62 years; his two sons, Captain Don De Pol (Brae), Dr. Jay De Pol (Kathy), 6 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, brother, Lester De Pol, and many nieces and nephews. His family would like to extend their gratitude to all his friends and family that were so much a part of his fantastic life.
