On Sunday, October 9, 2016, Donald Henry "Skip" Ruth, MD, 81, died at home after a decade-long battle against cancer. Dr. Ruth was predeceased by his parents Henry Bergey Ruth, Helen Keller Ruth Brault -Lansdale PA; is survived by his wife Ethel Stein Ruth; children April Ruth Diaz (David) -Beaver PA, Laura Ruth Donall (William) -Aberdeen MD, Donald Henry Ruth, II, MD (Laura Peter, MD) -Eleva WI; grandchildren Daniel, Benjamin and Caleb Diaz, Emily, Megan and Isabel Ruth; maternal aunt Stella Keller Godshall -Lansdale PA; siblings Patricia Ruth Periolat (John) -Charlottesville VA, John D Ruth (Nanette) -Telford PA, Anne Ruth Landes (John) -Knoxville TN, MaryAnn Ruth Doheny (Francis "Corky") of Radnor PA; exchange student sons Per Houge from Norway and Michael Heuer from Switzerland. Dr. Ruth graduated from Lansdale High School -Lansdale PA, from Ursinus College -Collegeville PA, from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine -Philadelphia PA, was an Intern at the Allentown General Hospital (PA). He joined the US Navy, trained at the School of Aviation Medicine -Pensicola FL, and served as flight surgeon at Naval Air Stations Midway Island HI and Willow Grove PA. After the Navy, he had a private practice in Souderton PA; was faculty at the Family Practice Residency Program at E.W. Sparrow Hospital -Lansing MI; Director of Family Practice Residency Program at Deaconness Hospital -Buffalo NY; Founder and Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at The Medical Center -Beaver Falls PA; had a private practice -Midland PA, and worked in Occupational Medicine until he retired. Dr. Ruth was honored by the Pennsylvania Medical Society for 50 years as a board certified Family Practice Physician, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the North Penn Alumni Athletic Association for accomplishments in Track and Field while in high school, was a musician and lover of music throughout his life and, after moving to MD, actively supported the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra by serving on the Board of Directors. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 1 pm at Grace United Methodist Church -Aberdeen MD. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made in Skip's memory to one of his favorite organizations: Pearl S Buck International (520 Dublin Rd, Perkasie, PA 18944 ), Ursinus College (601 E. Main St, Collegeville, PA 19426 ) and Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra (PO Box 963, Abingdon, MD 21009 )
