In memory of
Ray O. Lankford
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Village Chapel for Ray O. Lankford, 94, Gadsden, who passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016. Dr. David Carroll and the Rev. Albert Morgan will officiate. Burial will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Village Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Lankford was a veteran of WWII, serving during campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He participated in the liberation of two POW camps and Nordhausen Concentration Camp. Mr. Lankford told many funny and often horrific stories of his military service, to include venison steaks for Christmas during the Battle of the Bulge. He always thanked God and the thoughtful prayers of friends and family for seeing him through the war with several "close calls" but no injuries. Mr. Lankford was a member of Malone Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for many years. He worked for Stowers Mfg. Co., in Walnut Park, for 40 years. Mr. Lankford was preceded in death by his parents, Gurthie and Lurlie Lankford; brothers, Mitchell and Hoyt Lankford; and sister, Lois Knight. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Frazier Lankford; daughters, Ramona (Dennis) Griggs, Audrey (Russ) Samples; son, Dennis (Carol) Lankford; grandchildren, Chris (Elaine) Turner, Scott Samples, Angie (Jason) Busby and Michael Mummah; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn (Blake) Allen, Alex Turner, Steven Samples, Madison (Jacob) Self, Cole O'Bryant, Dillon Busby and Cara Busby; one great-great grandson, Finley Ray Allen, due Nov. 11, 2016; and special cousins, Richard Alverson and Roscoe Garner. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be friends, family and neighbors. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Amedisys Home Health and Hospice, Paulette Johnson, GRMC seventh-floor nursing staff, Riverview Wound Care and the many physicians and technicians who gave him special care during his last week. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at villagechapelfuneralhome.com.
