In memory of
Christopher Deane Smith
Christopher Deane Smith Camarillo, CA On October 5, 2016, Dr. Christopher Deane Smith, MD died at home surrounded by friends and family from complications of his cancer treatment. Chris was born September 7, 1945 in Long Beach California to Max and Gladys Smith. He attended Long Beach schools and graduated from Long Beach Poly, where he was student body president. He graduated from Occidental College and obtained his medical degree from the University of Southern California. Chris had a special talent for friendship, and during his school years he collected a number of lifelong comrades. Chris spent his professional career in the Camarillo, California vicinity. For most of that time, he was a highly regarded Emergency Room physician at St. John's Pleasant Valley Hospital, known for his caring bedside manner and passable Spanish. In his own words, "I have always believed that as long as I put forward my best effort, made reasonable decisions, listen closely to what people say and treated my patients with respect, I couldn't go far wrong." After retirement, Chris became a volunteer physician with Doctors Without Borders, serving in campaigns in Nigeria and South Sudan. He also served as president of Camarillo Hospice and as a volunteer at Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families. Christopher was a devoted father, and despite his rigorous profession he prioritized taking part in the neighborhood school carpool and attending Kendall and Connor's school events. Each summer, the family would carve a month from their busy schedules to travel together everywhere from Alaska to Indonesia to Peru, instilling in his children a worldly perspective and a love of the special bonding experience of travel. He particularly prized his annual river rafting men's trips on the Rogue in Oregon. Chris' broad smile could light up a room; his love of life brightened the lives of all who knew him. He was indescribably generous to friends and passing acquaintances alike. Through his work and simply by virtue of being the big-hearted man he was, Chris touched innumerable lives. Christopher is survived by his partner Darcey Lober; his former wife, Ellen Smith; his daughter, Kendall Jones & husband Richard and son Connor Smith; and his sister, Carolyn Magnuson. A memorial service will be held on October 30, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship: 3327 Old Conejo Rd, Newbury Park, CA 91320. Reception from 3:00-5:00 pm at 257 Valley Vista Drive, Camarillo, CA 93010.
