Marian Lucille (Snyder) Clarke
Marian Lucille (nee Snyder) Clarke (Age 90) Of Arlington, VA died on Thursday, October 13, 2016. Marian was born to the Mary and Ernest (Les) Snyder on April 27, 1926 and grew up in New Augusta, IN. She graduated from Purdue University in 1948 with a degree in psychology. While attending Purdue, she met and married Roderick William Clarke. Marian devoted the next two decades to raising three children with her husband, Roderick, who was a career air force officer. Throughout her adult life, Marian was dedicated to the American Red Cross as both professional staff and a volunteer. She was director of volunteers with the Washington, DC chapter, from 1970 to 1977. She later was a board member of the Alexander, VA chapter, Red Cross as well a disaster relief volunteer working in the aftermath of hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Florida. Marian lived in Alexandria, VA for 35 years where she was an active member of the Old Town North Urban Design Committee and a steering committee member of the city of Alexandria Urban Forestry program and was known as the "Tree Lady of Alexandria." Marian was the beloved wife of 69 years of Roderick W. Clarke; loving and devoted mother of Peter, Andrew (Gail) and Barbara (J. Douglass Leslie); proud grandmother of Devin Clarke, Kiersten Clarke and Sam Leslie and sister of Betty Myers and the late, Jack Snyder. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 21 from 10 to 11 a.m., at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA, where a Life Celebration Service will begin at 11am and a reception to follow at 12 noon. Graveside services at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
