Brother Marcel Riviere
Brother Marcel Riviere, S.C. Baton Rouge, LA Brother Marcel Riviere, S.C. (Lionel Pierre Riviere), 89, a resident of Baton Rouge the past four years, died peacefully at The Hospice of Baton Rouge just before midnight on Friday, October, 14, 2016. He suffered a massive stroke eleven days earlier which caused irreversible damage, rendering him partially paralyzed and unable to swallow. Brother Marcel, son of the late Anita Braud and Marcel Guy Riviere, was a native of Thibodaux, LA. He joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart from Thibodaux College in 1942, making first vows at Metuchen, NJ, in 1945. Brother Marcel spent much of his active ministry as a religious brother working in the formation of brothers and lay partners. He served on the congregation's General Administration, headquartered in Rome, Italy, for 18 years. He later ministered in Lyons, France, at the Coindre International Center for ten years. In the US, he served for nine years as director of the young brothers in study at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL; he directed the brothers at St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, MS, for six years; and he ministered on the Navajo Indian Reservation in St. Michael, AZ, for five years before retiring to Baton Rouge. Preceding Brother Marcel in death were his parents and his sister Marguerite Borne of Hammond, LA. He is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Annalee Ramirez of Metairie, LA; Mrs. Elaine Cox of Woodbridge, VA; and Mrs. Marcella Sylva of Georgetown, TX; as well as several brothers-in-law and a large number of nieces and nephews. Since Brother Marcel donated his body to science, a Memorial Mass for family and friends will be celebrated Saturday, October 22, at 10:30am in the chapel at St. Joseph Academy on 3080 Kleinert Street in Baton Rouge. His remains will later be interred in the Brothers' Cemetery in Bay St. Louis, MS.
