John W. Spiegel
John William Spiegel, 96, of Syracuse passed away Sunday at home. He was born July 31, 1920 to Norbert and Marguerite Schiller Spiegel. He was a 1938 graduate of North High School. John was a Army Air Force Veteran of WWII serving as an air traffic controller and technician in Nigeria, Morocco and Marrakech Air Base. After his service he returned to run the third generation family business of Spiegel Foods on Danforth St, established in 1900 and closed in 1972. John then worked for S.M. Flickengers Co. and later with the Syracuse School District retiring in 1986. John was an avid SU Sports Fan. He enjoyed fishing, golf, bowling, square dancing and playing pool.He was a life member of the Pastime Athletic Club and the Retired Teacher Association. Predeceased by his son-in-law Marty Parkinson. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, former Doris Barthel, a son Jack (Sue) Spiegel, three daughters Susan (Michael) Diehl, Janice Parkinson, Terri (Chris Kowalski) Monnet, a brother Norbert (Carol) Spiegel, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 11 am in Assumption Church. Entombment in Woodlawn Mausoleum. Calling Hour: Friday, 10-11 a.m. in the church.
