Jimmie Rush Sims Jr.
Jimmie Rush Sims, Jr. 1922-2016 Jimmie Rush Sims, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep, aged 94, at his Houston home on Sunday, 16th October, 2016. He was born on August 10th, 1922 in DeRidder, Louisiana, the elder of two sons of Jimmie Rush Sims, Sr. and Nell Dodd Sims. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Meints Sims, his younger brother Jack Sims, and an infant great-grandson Robert Anthony Sims. He is survived by his four children: Merrie Sims Longbottom of Sierra Vista, Arizona; Dodd Sims (Phyllis) of Arlington, Virginia; Karen Sims of Washington, DC; and Grant Sims (Patty) of Houston. Also surviving are his nine grandchildren: Stephanie Fulton (Andy) and Erica Craven-Green (Debbie); Eric Sims (Jill), Ryan Sims (Angela), and Scott Sims (Nicole); Jessica Herstek (Mark), Claire Sims, Christopher Rush Sims, and Kate Sims. He adored his nine great-grandchildren: Declan and Ryan Fulton; Molly, Catherine and Caroline Sims; Christopher Scott Sims; Maximus Herstek; and Oscar and Calvin Craven-Green; his sister-in-law Jo Murphy (Bill) of Aurora, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Jimmie enrolled at Iowa State University in 1941 but, before completing his degree, he enlisted in the US Navy and was commissioned at Colombia University as a Lieutenant J.G. and served with distinction in the Pacific during World War II. He then returned to university, graduating with a BS in Forestry and his entire career was spent in the lumber business (in Washington, Oregon, Kansas and Texas), the last 26 years with Kirby Forest Industries. Upon his retirement, he and Betty enjoyed numerous trips in the US and all over the world visiting far-flung family and friends. He also volunteered many years with Houston organizations including AARP, Habitat for Humanity, and The Food Pantry, as well as serving in various capacities at John Knox Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held at Memorial Oaks, 13001 Katy Freeway at Eldridge Parkway from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, 19th October. There will be a private family burial on Thursday morning October 20th, followed immediately by a service of thanksgiving for a life well-lived at 11:30am at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 2525 Gessner Road. All are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jimmie's memory to the Sims Family Fund for SMARD Research at the Jackson Laboratory or to John Knox Presbyterian Church.
