In memory of
Ansgar Mantel
Ansgar Mantel died on October 13, 2016, in his home. Born February 18, 1923, in Muenster, Germany, he moved with his family to Berlin in 1934, where he studied at the Collège Français, becoming fluent in French. He graduated from the Free University of Berlin and emigrated to Canada in 1952, living in Sept-Isles, Montreal, Toronto and ultimately Guelph, Ontario. He also earned a B.Com . degree from Concordia University in Montreal, and was a Chartered Accountant. He was married to Eva (Scheer) from 1950 until her death in 1991. In 1995 Ansgar married Susanne (Wiest) of Canton, CT, who survives him. After their marriage the couple moved first to Cambridge, VT, before ultimately settling in East Windsor, CT. An independent thinker with a knack for creating solutions and structure, Ansgar was promoted to leadership positions in every work setting, including at his long-time Canadian employer Domtar. He was an early pioneer in telecommunications and computer network design and security. Ansgar was enormously generous, and a gracious and attentive host. He loved a good lobster meal and any music by Bach. Also an avid traveler, he enjoyed visiting Europe, and explored his adopted continent from Canada to Mexico and Coast to Coast. He particularly loved Cape Cod, where he spent many happy hours sailing, as well as the peaceful landscape and people of Vermont. In addition to his wife Susanne, Ansgar is survived by his stepson Marc Wiest; brother Bruno Theodor Mantel, sister-in-law Hedi and niece Susan; nieces Dorothea and Christianne Scheer; and sister-in-law Anna Bresnick and niece Hannah. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, at 11:00am at Trinity Episcopal Church in Hartford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ansgar's memory may be made to Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut, (in support of Hospice), P.O. Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492; or to Trinity Episcopal Church (in support of Outreach), 120 Sigourney St, Hartford, CT 06105. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
