In memory of
Genette Hayes
Genette Hayes Hertford, North Carolina - Genette Christene Hayes, age 89, previously residing in Hertford, North Carolina, slipped away peacefully on October 15, 2016 in the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, North Carolina. What she loved doing most was caring for her family and neighbors. She took great pride in being a homemaker and gardening from sun up to sun down, sharing the abundance of her harvest with her family and neighbors, this was her passion. Flowers made her joyous. She was an excellent cook and loved sharing her recipes. Genette could sew anything, and fishing...well, she loved walking the street to show her big catch to the neighbors. Most of all she taught her family the many ways of giving true unconditional love. Genette was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Edward Hayes who passed away May 9, 2013. He was a glider, single engine and multi-engine Pilot for the United States Air Force. Carl retired after 26 years of Federal Service for the Commander Atlantic Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Norfolk and retired again as the Director of Building, Grounds, Construction, Planning and Contracts with the formerly know as Chesapeake General Hospital. He was past President of the Lions Club of Hertford. Carl loved to golf, the Albemarle Sound, building and adding to the family home, and he enjoyed walking, he always waved to everyone, he never knew a stranger while making those around him laugh. By his actions, he taught everyone, miracles do happen, you can overcome anything, even a near death trauma with grace, with a positive outlook and live an even better life because of it. Genette is survived by her two children: Carl David Hayes and wife Ruby Cathy Hayes of Kannapolis; Carla Hayes Hyatt and husband William Godwin Hyatt, III "Dusty" of Chesapeake. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Tiffany Nicole Rhoads and her husband Kevin Eugene Rhoads; Joseph Edward Hayes and his wife Christy Smith Hayes and three great grandchildren: Skyler Thomas Rhoads; Taylor Nicole Rhoads; Ainsley Kimberly Hayes The family will greet friends on Sunday, October 16th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Celebration of Genette's life with graveside service open to the community, will be held on Tuesday, October 18th at 2:00 pm at the Westlawn Memorial Park, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The Hayes family gives their deepest gratitude to their close neighbors who loved and watched out for Genette and Carl and have become extended family; to Hospice for their compassion and loving care; to the area Restaurants who did not treat them as patrons, but as family. In lieu of memorial donations, the Hayes family asks for each person to reach out and lift someone up, to shine your Light. The change that is needed begins right now, with each of us...let's go forward spreading love and hope...making a difference and creating a better world. Thank you!
