Maria Iwasiutyn AGE: 90 • Yonkers Maria Iwasiutyn, a long time resident of Yonkers passed away on Friday October 14, 2016 at the age of 90. Maria was born in Krasna, a small hutsul village in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine on August 11, 1926. Born in an impoverished village, she was deprived of schooling because her mother needed her to help care for her 4 younger siblings and grandmother. At the young age of 16 she was forcibly taken by Nazi soldiers and put to work as a slave laborer in Germany during World War II. She survived the hardships of war and met her husband Wolodymyr at a displaced persons camp. Several years later when the Allies liberated Europe they were given safe passage to come the United States, a country they knew stood for freedom for all people. They knew that their beloved country; Ukraine was occupied by the former USSR and the people were forced to endure living under a tyrannical communist regime. They were greatful to come to the US and with the help of the American Red Cross begin their family life in the Ukrainian community of St. Georges Church in Chicago Illinois. After a few years Maria her husband and their young children came to settle in Yonkers and became active members of the Ukrainian community. Maria's husband Wolodymyr was actively involved in the Ukrainian American Youth Association and the Maria participated in the activities of the Ukrainian Woman's League of America (Soyuz Ukrainok). Maria also worked very hard to support her husband at work at his glass studio in NYC. She was a devoted mother who sacrificed for the benefit of her children. She will be remembered for her spirit, the love of her beloved Ukraine and her devotion to her children and family. She is survived by her daughter Oksana Hulinsky, grandson Alexander as well as her son Jaroslaw, wife Julie and grandchildren Katya, Nicholas and Peter. The family will receive friends Monday October 17th 2pm - 4pm and 6pm - 8pm. Pannakhyda Service Monday 7:30pm at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday October 18th at 9:30am at the St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yonkers.
