Tommy L. Smith
SMITH Tommy L. Smith, 77, passed away on October 4, 2016. He was born on June 9, 1939 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was in the class of '57 of Northside High in Ft. Worth. He retired from the US Navy April 1, 1980 after a 23 year career and then retired from NADEP Jax, January 3, 2003. Tommy was preceded in death by his father and mother, Charles and Mable May McMurtrey Smith, brother-in-law, Richard Hamblen and his aunt Dorothy all of the Ft. Worth, TX area. He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Connie; two step sons, Rob Vestel of Jacksonville (5 children and a great-granddaughter) in the St. Petersburg area, and Shawn Vestel (Hollie) and their son, Ryan (who was born on Tom's birthday) of Gainesville, FL. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Joyce McQueen of Decatur, IL and her daughter Sheryl of Peoria, IL; a brother Raymond (Charolet) of Ft. Worth, TX., their 2 sons and 2 granddaughters and 2 great-grandchildren; sister JoAnn Hamblen of Arlington, TX (2 daughters and grandchildren); step-sister Jackie Haag (Ron) of Missoula, MT., their sons and grandchildren; as well as cousins in Texas; and Tommy and Conni's little dog, Bubba. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6pm-8pm on Monday, October 17, 2016. Funeral services will take place at Jacksonville National Cemetery on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with military honors. A luncheon at VFW Post 7909 at 6204 Blanding Blvd will be held. HARDAGE-GIDDENS, TOWN & COUNTRY FUNERAL HOME, 7242 Normandy Boulevard is serving the family.
