Herbert S. Lee Jr.
Waterford - Herbert S. Lee Jr. was born on Jan. 12, 1926 in Memphis, Tenn. and passed away at his home in Waterford on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016. Herbert was the eldest child of Herbert Sr. and Mattie Lee. He attended Memphis public schools until his high school career was interrupted due to his service in the U.S. Navy. He returned to complete his high school education after four years of service. Upon completion, he returned to military service. Herbert was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received numerous accommodations and awards including the National Defense Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After the military, Herbert worked for the state of Connecticut at Mystic Oral School for 25 years. Herbert was a member of Walls Clarke Temple AME Zion Church for 53 years where he faithfully served as preacher's steward, financial steward, member of the board of trustees and leader of leaders. Herbert enjoyed walking along the State Pier, listening to jazz and baseball on his radio and spending time with his grandchildren. Herbert is survived by his son, Gerald (Tricia) of Windsor; his daughter, Shay, also of Windsor; his sister, Shirley Stephens of Indianapolis, Ind.; and three grandchildren, Sekou, Amiri and Madison. Herbert was predeceased by three siblings, Frances Owens, Alfred Lee and Raymond Lee. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Ada (1975) and his second wife, Julia (2005), who he married in 1978. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Walls Clarke Temple AME Zion Church, 16 Belden St., New London. The family will receive visitors at the church from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
