In memory of
Joan Parina
Joan Theresa Parina Passed away peacefully on October 2, 2016 at the age of 83. Joan was born on June 25, 1933, the sixth of six children of Irish immigrants, Ellen and William Sheehan. Beloved wife of John A Parina (deceased). Loving mother of Katherine Parina (deceased), Vincent Parina and Ellen Niven. Proud grandmother of Jimmy Niven, Caitlin Grace Niven, Nicholas Parina and Jack Parina. She is also survived by her brother Don Sheehan (Susan) of Santa Rosa. A San Franciscan her entire life, she attended St. Monica's Grammar School and Presentation High School, after which she went to work as a Secretary for the insurance firm of Marsh & McLennan in their San Francisco office. Joan and John met on a date arranged by her life-long best friend Mary Alice McNaughton and her husband Gerry, which resulted in their marriage on November 22, 1958. In 1960 they purchased their home on 39th Avenue in the City's Sunset District where she became a devoted parishioner of St. Gabriel's and together they began raising their family. Joan was caring, loving and also a woman of great character and strength. Upon John's untimely death as a San Francisco Firefighter on March 31, 1973, she was left with the challenge of being a single parent raising Katherine, then 12, Vincent (10) and Ellen (8). She was a devoted mother with her children's welfare being her priority. She was always volunteering at St. Gabriel's School and spent countless hours watching soccer & football games or whatever other activity her children were involved in. In 1986, and upon becoming an empty nester, is when Mom could finally start to relax. Time was then spent enjoying dinners out and vacations with her daughter Ellen and son-in-law Jim as well as BBQ's and weekends in the East Bay at her son's home. It was also when she was able to begin having all the fun she enjoyed being a doting Grandmother. "Grandma" never arrived without candy and little toys for the grandkids and even a treat for the Grand dogs! Rest in peace Mom and thank you for all you did. You will be missed terribly. Special thanks to the staff at St. Mary's Hospital who made Mom's final days as comfortable as possible. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 18th at 11:00 am at St. Gabriel's Church, 2559 40th Ave., San Francisco. Donations to be made to the charity of your choice.
