Roy Wayne Harkleroad
Roy Wayne Harkleroad, 81, of Bulls Gap, passed away at his residence Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 15, 1935 in Kingsport to the late Kelly and Jane Harkleroad. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He taught his family how to live life filled with love, faith, kindness and compassion. Now he is teaching us how to die with faith, love and dignity knowing we will meet again at the feet of Jesus. Roy Wayne enjoyed raising Brace Beagling Beagles. He was an American Kennel Club judge and traveled the United States with his championship beagles winning many awards. He retired from the United States Army following 22 years of service as a combat engineer and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He attended the United Methodist Church and was an avid Washington Redskins fan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Pearson. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 17 years, Ruth Harkleroad; sons, Jerry Harkleroad and wife, Kathy and Terry Harkleroad and wife, Sharon; sisters, Sue Abee and husband, David, Fay Weaver and husband, Charles and Paulette Dean; aunt, Myrtle Freshour; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends 5 to 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Fireside Room at Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services, Kingsport. A celebration of life service will follow at 7 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel with pastor Lewis Kizer officiating. Music will be under the direction of Bryon Fogleman. A military graveside and committal service will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 at Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Garden of Sermon On The Mount. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to, Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605. Arrangements by Oak Hill Funeral & Cremation Services.
