Audrey Louise Simmons
July 4, 1928 – October 14, 2016. Mrs. Audrey Louise Machado Grest Simmons, of Hammond, LA, died peacefully on October 14, 2016 at the age of 88. Audrey was born July 4, 1928 in New Orleans and lived there until husband, Gottfried (Godfrey) Grest Jr., and the family moved to Ponchatoula in 1972. Audrey lovingly raised her 5 children, instilling in them values of diligence, humility, and discipline. She was left a widow when Godfrey passed away. She later married Curtis J. Simmons with whom she resided in Baton Rouge for many years. They had many travel adventures throughout the U.S., Europe, and the Holy Land. Audrey was a dedicated Christian all of her life. Her life work included working at The Enterprise Newspaper in Ponchatoula and the Pregnancy Problem Center in Baton Rouge. Audrey took great pride in her role as mother and grandmother to 17 grandchildren, and at the time of her passing, 13 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing games, cooking, crocheting and teaching others. Her love and warmth has been shared with all who she knew. She is preceded in death by her husband Gottfried Grest, Jr., husband Curtis J. Simmons, and son David Grest. She is survived by her children, Gary Grest, Dana Grest Sartin, Kevin Grest, and Eric Grest and wife Ronda; Michael Simmons and wife Donis, and Nanette Simmons Debuhr: Sisters, Beverly Havard, Diane Wilks, and Georgette Campeaux: Grandchildren, Stephen, Christopher, Jonathan and Nicholas Grest, Haylee Fannaly, Joshua Sartin, Summer Grest, Bria Richardson, Ryan, and Dylan Grest, Laura, Kyle, and Amy Grest; Aaron Simmons, Sarah McRae, Zachary and Olivia Debuhr; Great-Grandchildren, Allee and Anna Richardson, Victoria, Ava, and Owen Sartin, Maddox, Grahym, Hayden, and Liam Fannaly, Collan Grest, and Bowen Floyd, Peggy and Hazel Simmons. Donations in her name can be made to a crisis pregnancy center of your choosing. A celebration of life will be held at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, 12012 Highway 190 W, Hammond LA on Monday, October 17, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 p.m. An interment service at Resthaven Garden of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge LA will follow.
