Jim served not only stateside but had multiple tours in Germany and in Korea on the DMZ. Often, army personnel returning from combat tours in Vietnam would come thank Sargent Spradlin for the survival skills he had taught his recruits which made it possible for them to survive the perils of jungle warfare in Southeast Asia. But the one thing Jim was most proud of and loved the most was his family. Preceding him in death are his previous wife, Anna Margaret Spradlin, eldest son, Gary Spradlin, and lifelong friend, Charles "Tee" Hayes. Surviving family are wife, Barbara Ann Spradlin, Elizabethtown, Kentucky; children Deborah (Victor) Bianchine of Panama City, Florida; Donna Spradlin (Gary) of Youngstown, Florida; James Spradlin (Michele) of Royal Palm Beach, Florida; Tressa Gunter (Henry) of Marianna, Florida; Steven Spradlin (Linda) of Lynn Haven, Florida; and Barbara Flannery of Sebring, Florida; stepsons Charles "Buster" Hayes (Sheree) of Germany; Bobby Hayes of Youngstown, Florida; and David Hayes (Marie), of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
