Gordon Albert Hartley
Gordon Albert Hartley passed away in Houston TX on September 21, 2016 at the age of 89. He was born on June 28, 1927 in Stafford, CT to Albert Hartley and Evelyn Hayden Chillson. He was raised in Enfield and attended school there. Gordon left high school at the age of 17 to join the United Stated Navy. He served in the Amphibious Force in Okinawa. Later he went back to Leyte in the Philippines for the final preparations strike against Japan. He was honorably discharged on July 16, 1946 and returned to Enfield, CT. He married Irene Cannon and they were married for 62 years. Gordon was a resident of Suffield for many years and lived a busy life. He was employed in retail sales and real estate. Gordon was a Boy Scout Master in Suffield for five years; volunteered with the West Suffield Fire Dept. for ten years, served as the president of the Suffield Fireman Assoc., was a member of the Republican Town Committee for twenty years and on the Suffield Police Commission for four years. Gordon's grandchildren expressed that his accomplishments were his integrity and his ability to make others feel welcome. Gordon is survived by his two grandchildren, Joshua and Kaitlyn Martin and son-in-law Michael Martin of Houston, TX. His twin siblings Jane Catania of Norwich, CT and John Hartley and his wife Rita of Enfield, CT and his sister-in-law Loretta Hartley of Pompano Beach FL. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Irene Cannon Hartley, son Mark Hartley, daughter Lynn Hartley (Martin) and his two brothers Allan and Donald Hartley. The family extends their thanks to Kathy and Rick Cade and Bob Perez for their care, kindness, compassion and support for Gordon. A graveside service will be held at the Over the Mountain Cemetery, Phelps Road West Suffield, CT. at the convenience of the family.
