Irene C. Downing
DOWNING Irene Castle Elam, a homemaker and historian, passed away on Wednesday at Central Baptist Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Downing, who on St. Patrick's Day celebrated her 90th birthday with many friends and family, was the widow of Robert G. Downing Sr., to whom she was married for 59 years. Born in Lexington, she was the daughter of Kelly C. and Ida C. Elam. A long-time member of Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church where she served as a Moderator of the Presbyterian Women and a Sunday school teacher, Mrs. Downing was a historian of both the church and North Fayette County, giving speeches to many groups and organizations. She was blessed with a strong faith in Christ and a love for family, was kind, generous and gracious with a tremendous gift for gab. As a long-time member of Spindletop Country Club, she was involved with the YESS Club, and also participated in the Spindletop Homemakers Club. She was a member of the Bryan Station Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and trips to the Gulf Coast. She was a graduate of Lafayette High School and attended Transylvania University. Mrs. Downing felt her greatest accomplishment was her family, and she is survived by her three sons, Dr. Robert G. Downing Jr. (Robin), Martin E. Downing and Brooks D. Downing (Cassandra), all of Lexington. She also is survived by her four grandchildren, Robert G. Downing III, Camille C. Downing and Carmen C. Downing, all of Lexington, and David M. Downing, PhD of Asheville, N.C. And she is survived by sister-in-law Jo Ann Elam of Lexington and brother-in-law Frank Downing of Owenton, as well as many nieces and nephews whom she adored. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Hobert, Hubert and James Elam, and sisters Elizabeth "Dolly" Stone and Catherine Hocker Scott. Visitation will be from 5-8pm Sunday at Milward-Broadway. Funeral services will be at 11am Monday at Milward-Broadway with a graveside service to follow at Lexington Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert G. Downing Jr., Robert G. Downing III, David Downing, Gregg Elam, Don Stone, Jerry Stone, Doug Elam, and Tim Elam. Honorary pallbearers include Billy Hayes, John (Tommy) Rucker, Ronald Compton, Dr. Russel Compton and Dr. Robert French. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Mt.
