Norman James Neiss
Norman James Neiss Born: September 2, 1926; in McHenry, IL Died: October 1, 2016; in Ashburn, VA Norman James Neiss, age 90, CDR, USN Ret. died on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Ashby Ponds community in Ashburn, VA. He was a longtime resident of Fairfax, VA and Solomons, MD. Norman was born on September 2, 1926 in McHenry, IL and was the son of Peter and Theresa Neiss. He was a 1944 graduate of McHenry Community High School and a member of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout with two Palms. He left McHenry upon joining the United States Navy. Norman was for 67 years the husband of Marguerite T. Dugdale and the father of Douglas Neiss, Susan Neiss Diaz, Leslie Neiss, Patricia Neiss (R. Scott Heon), and David Neiss (Kimberly Neiss). Norman was the devoted grandfather to seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Diane Neiss, of Johnsburg, IL; a niece, Monica Marsh (Richard), and her family; two nephews, Randolph "Randy" Neiss (Cathy) and Richard "Rick" Neiss, and their families. Norman served 30 years in the United States Navy, primarily as a naval aviator, and retired as a decorated Commander. He owned and operated the AAMCO transmission center in Bethesda, MD and retired for a second time in 1986. He became greatly involved in civic affairs and served on civic associations and district councils in Fairfax County, VA and civic associations in Calvert County, MD. He was honored by his friend, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, in the U. S. Congressional Record on May 15, 2012 for greater than 50 years of service to his community. He was an avid fisherman and sailor, spending much of his free time at the family home in Solomons, MD. His wide range of interests and hobbies included mechanics, electronics and family genealogy. He was an active internet user and established an extensive network of relationships associated with his research on the Neiss family. A memorial visitation will be held on November 5, 2016 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the National Naval Aviation Museum, 1750 Radford Boulevard, Suite C, Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL 32508 . Interment will take place with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
